Freedom.

Gnorm's tree may be cramped and Walter's house may be small and remote, but everyone needs a refuge. It's probably for the best these two get separated for a while. You know, before they kill each other and all.

More Interruption.

I know what you're thinking. You're thinking, "Holy crap, did he just pull out a reference to the opera Pagliacci? In a webcomic?!" Well, you're damn skippy I did. Booyah.

I'm posting Friday's comic a little early since I will be too busy tomorrow to do it. Hope that doesn't throw anyone off too much.

Journaling.

Sometimes seeing your situation clearly can be worse than whatever delusion of normalcy you've been kidding yourself with. Ignorance can be bliss, if you let it.

Facing the Truth.

I initially felt the first line of the third panel was the punch line, but kept thinking that it was a little too obvious. So, I added the the secondary joke of someone describing that visual gag of calling someone nuts. I hope it turns the obvious around on you a little.

Interruption.

I had a whole, complex explanation laid out about what was going on in that room and trust me, it's more bizarre than you might think. Then I thought, maybe it isn't more bizarre than what you think. So, I think I'll just leave it as a visual and let you, dear reader, try to fill in the blanks. The weirder the better.

This Sunday, the 7th, I will be joining a few other independent cartoonists at The Dragon's Lair, an awesome comic shop in Austin, TX. Planned to coincide with the independent media expo STAPLE!, the Dragon's Lair has organized a panel discussion about indie publishing and comics. They've asked me to be a part of the event and I'm really flattered to be asked. After the discussion I'll be on hand to sell copies of my books and to sign them. Come out for some fun, interesting conversation about self publishing and underground books this Sunday, from 1:00 - 5:00. I'll see you there!

What a World.

If you've ever visited a an older relative you may have noticed their affinity for extreme heat. The folks of my grandparents' generation just crank that heater up to an amazing, blood boiling temperature and I don't know how they stand it. If I could display such an extreme visual metaphor like Gnorm here maybe they'd take the hint better that the heat is uncomfortable. But, probably not.

Today is the Day.

I don't know why exactly I had Walter dressing up for his big trip off his property. I have a vague notion that back in the day folks seemed to dress up for everything they did outside of their house. I think Walter probably comes from a generation that would do that. Of course, he couldn't go through with it anyway so I guess that whole suit idea was moot from the start anyway. Poor Walter.

Gone Fishin.

Being someone's house guest isn't always easy. You don't want to be rude, but you also can't help but to be kinda creeped out by some of the things you find out about what your hosts do behind closed doors. It's interesting how far Gnorm was willing to go before he got to the point he felt this was odd.

Look at that Plant.

Time to get back to the fun. To be honest I really had enough of talking about county planning commissions and customer service red tape. I felt like I was leading you guys down a boring rabbit hole. There will be a reason for that story-line later, but for now let's get back to some craziness. Today's strip idea comes to you courtesy of an idea from my six year old son who, along with the rest of his kindergarten class, find eyeballs hysterical. Who am I to argue with the current trends in comedy.

Robocalling.

Here's an old phone phreak trick that's as fun today as it was back in the 80's when I first heard about it. Get two phones with two different lines. We used to use pay-phones that were next to each, but I don't know if those exist anymore. On each phone call a different customer service number and then hold them up to each other so each agent thinks the other called them. Hilarity then ensues. Double points for connecting two different customer service agents in the same company.

A Long, Strange Trip.

I'm sure anyone who has ever tried to get tech support over the phone has experienced that single moment, that dawning realization that the quick phone call you thought you were going to have to get an answer to a question was about to turn into an epic quest for forbidden knowledge. Well, if you though the dark annals of corporate customer support was bad just wait until the day you must sift through governmental red tape over the phone. I shudder to even imagine it.

Oh...Right.

Walter's problems just keep piling up. He's been brewing for a fight with the city bureaucrats over the planned construction so much that the thought of having to bring the fight off his hill never occurred to him. He's got some details to work out.

I got word from Blogger.com that they'll be making changes to the services they provide in publishing posts to their blog accounts. Unfortunately their changes are going to ruin how I use my blog. I prefer to host my blog on my own servers and Blogger is taking away the ability to post via FTP to servers other than their own.

So, I am working on alternative technologies to continue posting to a new blog feed. As I play around with the code on the back end readers may see some funkiness on my site. If you see something screwy don't hesitate to let me know so I can fix it. Hopefully this transition won't cause too much of a disruption and won't take too long either.

This past weekend I exhibited at the Dallas Comic Con where I sold books and prints from the Hermit Hill comic strip, but the big seller was sketches. I was doing them constantly. During the winter here it's rare to see snow and ice, but it does happen from time to time. Recently we had a pretty bad cold spell come wafting through and the biggest danger in my commute to and from work were sprinklers. People would forget and leave them on their timers over night, creating frozen ponds in the street in from of their houses. Craziness.

So, if Walter keeps hallucinating that things are talking to him, but he doesn't know that he's hallucinating that his teeth are alive with conspiratorial motives, how can he be hallucinating them in the first place? Maybe it's his subconscious that's hallucinating this time. Or maybe I've just written myself into a corner. Hmm. Oh well, I just think the visuals are funny. That should be justification enough in a comic strip.

The perspective in that final panel was a little tricky. I wanted it to translate into a camera angle pointing past the row of teeth, out of Walter's mouth and onto the tooth brush being prepared. I'm back from my holiday. I skipped the last couple of updates in order to spend time with my family while we celebrated having some vacation time. I'm now back and ready to hit the new year with some new comic strip updates.

I don't know why Walter's body parts always seem like they're in revolt against him. I guess the older you get the more your body feels like this. Over the holidays I munched on one of those multi-flavored popcorn tins and ended up with a kernel stuck in my teeth for like two days before I finally got it out. Hence the impetus of today's strip.

Indy Comic Book Week Kicks Off!

Tomorrow is the kick off to Indy Comic Book Week! This is an event I've been involved with since this past August. Diamond Distributions, the primary source of comic books to retail stores across America, won't be shipping out new comics this week. Independent publishers and individual creators have been stepping up to the plate and offering our books to retailers to fill their "New This Week" shelves. For one week you'll have a chance to sample a broad range of creativity from new writers and artists as they fill in for the big name titles.

For my contribution to the event I've put out a new comic book, Hermit Hill the Comic Strip (B&W interior, 20pg, $2.00 cover), which features all new never before printed comic strips from my webcomic, and I illustrated one of the stories in the David Hopkins anthology mini-comic "One Night Stand". Both these books can be found at participating comic retailers around America and especially in the Dallas, Texas area.

Also, to help promote the event I'll be doing an in-store signing tomorrow from 11am-7pm at Madness Games & Comics in Plano, TX. While there I'll be signing copies of my books and giving away prints, pins and sketches. Please stop by and say hi if you're in the area. In fact, many of the original organizers of ICBW will be doing signings all day tomorrow at various comics retailers all around Dallas including at Zeus Comics, Titan Comics, Keith's Comics, Lonestar Comics and probably a few others. It might be a good idea to plan out a tour of shops if you're in the Dallas area. I've heard that many other shops in other cities are planning similar events, so contact your local dealers to find out who's taking part in the event.

A lot of creators have been busting our butts to put these books together in time for this week. A lot of retailers have taken the plunge in dealing with inexperienced and unproven sources for their books. We've all taken financial risks, worked into sleepless nights and have been screaming from the rooftops to pull this off. Now it's up to you, the readers. Please go out to your local participating comic shop this week and check out what everyone has been working so damn hard to bring you. Help make this event a success and help to make comics history! Thank you!
