Heavy Thoughts.
The anvil was something that was always falling out of the sky in the cartoons I watched growing up in the 80's, which were mostly cartoons produced in the 50's and 60's. But, even back then were anvils that common? Was the town blacksmith such an iconic figure that a massively heavy anvil would be such an immediately recognizable object in these cartoons? Yes, these are the things I think about. Often.

I remember seeing my first anvil, and trying to pick it up. Those things are heavy! Suddenly, all those cartoon scenarios seemed more tragic than humorous.
I always loved the Roadrunner cartoons with the anvils the best. But as a kid, I never knew what an anvil was, outside of the cartoon itself. It wasn't until years later that I discovered the anvil was an archaic device for blacksmithing. Then I wondered why the cartoons chose the anvil to be the constant "heavy thing" to drop.
